Ziro is a beautiful plateau and the headquarters of Lower Subansiri District. It is one of the oldest towns in Arunachal Pradesh.

This beautiful hill station is located 1500 metres above sea level. The place has an imposing landscape of beautiful lush green forest, rivulets and elevated patches. It is famous for paddy-cum-pisciculture cultivation. The area is renowned for the terrace paddy fields where the unique system of poly-culture and water management is practiced by the local people.
Mainly inhabited by the Apatani tribe, the town wears a festive look during festivals celebrated by the Apatani people.

The Apatanis ,one of the major ethnic groups of eastern Himalayas, have a distinct civilization with systematic land use practices and rich traditional ecological knowledge of natural resources management and conservation, acquired over the centuries through informal experimentation.
Fact or myth?
A unique fact about the Apatani tribe is that, women of this tribe used to practice a custom of getting facial tattoos. This was done since they believed that women of the Apatani tribe were so beautiful that they had to tattoo their faces in order to not let men from other tribes steal them away!

The mild climate of Ziro during summer makes it a favoured destination. Except April to June, Ziro stays pleasant throughout the year. However, September is the month to travel if you also want to attend the yearly Ziro Music Festival.
The Ziro Music Festival
The Ziro Festival of Music is an outdoor music festival held in the Ziro valley in the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh which celebrates Music, Food, and People. It showcases the independent music scene in India. The festival is spread over four days and is hosted by members of the Apatani people in Ziro.It is the platform of National and International musicians to showcase their talents of music during the festival. It permits the local musicians of North-East states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland an opportunity to showcase their talents.
There is plenty of yummy food to nosh on. It has stalls from each state in the region selling local food, along with more standard grub such as burgers and sandwiches, noodles and fried rice, grilled meats and vegetables at the festival. A must-try is the bamboo chicken, a local delicacy that is light and flavourful. There is also great rice beer to be tried besides the other beer and alcohol available. You will also find people eating rats and silkworms, an option you can explore!
